Hand baggage

Passengers are permitted to carry one item of hand luggage through security, unless noted otherwise by Carriers. You will, however, need to check with your airline before arrival at the airport. Some airlines may allow you to carry more than one item (see list below) of hand baggage, and the weight and size allowances differ between airlines:

  • bag or briefcase,
  • umbrella or walking aid,
  • overcoat or travelling rug
  • crutches or folding wheel chair
  • cradle or pushchair,
  • books or magazines,
  • items purchased in the airport

Check with your airline as some have further restrictions on the items allowed.

In accordance with Reg. EU 2015/1998, Attachment 4-C, some items are strictly prohibited and passengers shall not be permitted to carry them in their hand luggage:

  1. guns, firearms and other devices that discharge projectiles – devices capable, or appearing capable, of being used to cause serious injury by discharging  a projectile;
  2. stunning devices  – devices designed specifically to stun or immobilize;
  3. objects with a sharp point or sharp edge – objects with a sharp point or sharp edge capable of being used to cause serious injury;*
  4.  workmen’s tools – tolls capable of being used either to cause serious injury or to threaten the safety of aircraft;
  5. blunt instruments – objects capable of being used to cause serious injury when used to hit;
  6. explosive and incendiary substances and devices – explosive and incendiary substances and devices capable, or appearing capable, of being used to cause serious injury or to pose a threat to the safety of aircraft.

The competent national authority (ENAC) has introduced more restrictive measures regarding objects with a sharp point or sharp edge with blades of less than 6 cm: the transport of these objects is now banned.

What should I do during the security screening?

In order to speed up security screening, please follow the instructions of the airport staff and, using the trays provided, place into the x-ray machine:

  • your hand luggage;
  • laptop computer, tablet and/or electrical items measuring A5 (21cm X 15cm) or larger must be removed from your cabin baggage and screened separately;
  • coats or jackets;
  • metal items;
  • your duty free LAGs (gels, aerosols, pastes, lotions, foams, creams, jams, liquid/solid mixtures and other items of similar consistency) and receipts purchased from any airport or airline sealed at the time of purchase inside a security bag with a red border (STEB), subject to security control;
  • medicines and special dietary products, essential during the journey, accompanied by the relative medical prescription;
  • food for children (up to 10 years old), vital for the trip. These items may be subject to additional security checks;
  • LAGs in containers of 100ml or less packed in a single transparent, re-sealable 1-litre plastic bag (e.g. approximately 18cm X 20cm);
  • all other LAGs screened separately, using the trays provided.

Pass through the security metal detector, having ensured that you have no metal objects on your person.

During the security control process, please monitor all your personal belongings. We kindly remind you that Toscana Aeroporti-PISA S.p.A. is not responsible for loss of any object.
