Liquids in the hand luggage

Restrictions to liquids carried in the hand luggage

Whilst there are no restrictions to the amount of LAGs (liquids, gels, aerosols, pastes, lotions, foams, creams, jams, liquid/solid mixtures and other items of similar consistency) which may be stowed in hold luggage, only small amounts may be taken on board as hand (cabin) luggage. Any such LAGs should be carried in containers packed in a single transparent, re-sealable plastic bag no larger than 1-litre (e.g. approximately 18 cm X 20 cm).

Each container should have a capacity of no more than 100ml and all containers should fit comfortably inside the sealed plastic bag.
Each passenger (infants included) may carry only one such bag of liquids. The bag must be presented for examination at security screening (see image).

Some LAGs are permitted in larger quantities above the 100ml limit but will be subject to authentication:

  • medicines and special dietary products, essential during the journey, accompanied by the relative medical prescription;
  • food for children (up to 10 years old), vital for the trip. These items may be subject to additional security checks;
  • duty free LAGs and receipts purchased from any airport or airline sealed at the time of purchase inside a security bag with a red border (STEB). These items may need to be screened by the security officers. The security bag must remain sealed until the final destination.

All other LAGs should be packed into the hold luggage and checked in. LAGs of any amount may still be carried in luggage checked into the aircraft, unless noted otherwise by Carriers.

For further information, please visit ENAC website.

Starting 31st January 2014, the above-mentioned LAGs, excluded from quantity restrictions, must be inspected separately at the airport screening points, by using specific Liquid Explosive Detection Systems (LEDS).

In order to speed up the security screening:

  • present your LAGs separately from other hand luggage for screening at security
  • security may require bottles or containers to be opened for screening

If in doubt ask your airline or retailer in advance of travelling for further information.

We ask that you kindly cooperate with the security officers and the airline personnel.
